Good Agricultural Practices
Our food safety program is based on the FDA’s Good Agricultural Practices and the California Department of Health Services guidance in developing an industry-wide food safety program. Additionally, California Giant strictly adheres to guidance developed and certified by Primus Labs, a third-party audit laboratory. This third- party guidance applies to each field operation; evaluating and certifying standards with regard to worker safety and sanitation, cultural practices, as well as water and soil testing.
Food safety and security goes well beyond our field operations. After California Giant berries are harvested and packed in the field, fruit is delivered to state-of-the-art forced air cooling facilities, the majority of which are company-owned. These facilities adhere to strict manufacturing processes further ensuring food safety standards as the berries ultimately make their way to consumers. Our procedures, along with third-party auditing assures all operations are clean, safe and managed with the utmost professionalism.
Employee safety and training is an integral part of the California Giant food safety and worker safety programs. All employees are trained thoroughly to understand job expectations, proper documentation procedures, and how food safety practices at California Giant relates to their specific work at the company as well as the overall quality of our products.
Recyclable Packaging
California Giant utilizes recyclable clamshell containers and corrugated packaging for our product line. We continue to test new and innovative recyclable or biodegradable materials as they are introduced into the marketplace for improved performance. The company also utilizes recyclable pallets and returnable plastic containers (RPC) whenever possible. Container make-up sheds supplying 100% of California Giant products are also required to recycle all waste fiber and plastic products from their facilities.
Water and Soil
Drip irrigation allows us to manage water resources with an efficiency that has become common practice at California Giant for over 30 years. By delivering only the necessary amounts of water and nutrients to our crop in a targeted approach in the drip system, we are able to conserve water and reduce waste of the nation’s most precious resources.
Soil health is critical to ensure a healthy plant and high quality, flavorful product. Crop rotation is an essential part of our agricultural system for berries that helps to nurture the soil resulting in a sustainable long-term program. Responsible choices and application of soil amendments are also an important part of a long-term sustainable program. We utilize composting, a natural use of resources that help maintain biodiversity and sustainable agricultural systems. All composted materials utilize green materials that are sterilized, tested and audited for safety.
