As one of the nation’s largest strawberry companies, California Giant has built a reputation on consistency, excellent quality and customer satisfaction. However, there are factors beyond our control that can affect flavor and shelf life. If we experience poor weather conditions, shelf life can be shortened for a time period until normal weather patterns return. Additionally, at times our retail partners may have challenges in moving product through the distribution system in a timely fashion resulting in shorter shelf life due to the time held prior to sale. Please review our videos to ensure you receive the best quality from your local grocer.
No. Size is not a factor in determining flavor in strawberries. Flavor is influenced by the growing weather conditions and stage of berry ripeness when harvested. The berry should be completely red with no white near the calyx. Each strawberry plant continually produces fruit in varying sizes every day. To heighten their naturally sweet flavor, try serving strawberries at room temperature.
Like you, we are very concerned about the environment and try to do our part to preserve our precious resources. We use fully recyclable corrugated shipping boxes for all of our berries. We also use recyclable clamshells that actually include recycled material in manufacturing. We utilize recyclable pallets exclusively. We also use recycled paper in our corporate offices and recycle all corrugated and plastic waste from our cooling and packaging facilities. We need your help to ensure that communities continue to support recycling centers for all packaging materials and encourage others in your community to recycle.
No – California Giant berries (strawberries, raspberries blackberries and blueberries) are individually hand-picked when they are fully ripened. Once harvested, berries do not continue to ripen, but they will spoil quickly if left un-refrigerated. Be sure to watch our videos for best selection and storage tips.
California Giant growers control pest damage by working with nature. Growers rely on natural pest enemies, pest resistant varieties, pest monitoring, cultural practices and other methods to minimize the need for pesticides. Working closely with scientists at the University of California, growers use models of pest and disease life cycles to determine the best times for applications so pesticides or insecticides are used only when necessary to protect the survival of the plants. We encourage you to visit safefruitsandveggies.com to get more information on pesticide use, exposure and potential risk. We also suggest you review the calculator on that site to determine real risk for adults and children. If you are still concerned about these practices, we do produce organic berries as an alternative.

California Giant does not use GMO”s. California Giant relies of traditional breeding methods used by University breeders in developing the most flavorful and highest quality fruit available in each of our growing districts. For our customers, this means continued enhancement of our berries’ flavor, size, condition and color.
We have always been leaders in the areas of health and food safety in our farming and handling practices. We continually strive to move beyond the industry standards and work with an outside audit company, Primus Laboratories, that performs third-party verification of our farming methods including worker hygiene and safety. All the field operations and facilities producing and handling our products are audited and certified. We also have a full time food safety manager on staff monitoring our field and facilities on a daily basis.
Our berries are sweetened naturally by the sun. Once fully ripened they are packed directly into plastic clamshells and shipped to your store. No washing or processing of any kinds is done, so be sure to wash your fresh berries under a cool spray of water before serving.
Berries are one of the most delicious and nutritious fruits. In fact, research shows that the darker the berry; the better they are for you. All of our berries provide vitamins, minerals and antioxidants while serving as a fat free, low calorie everyday snack for the whole family. For the nutrient attributes for a specific berry type, please visit our Strawberries, Blueberries, Blackberries or Raspberries page.
There are concerns about gluten with regard to how our berries are grown and harvested. We don’t use any type of straw on our farms or any type of plant material on the raised beds in our strawberry fields. This holds true for all of our berries, and our berries are hand harvested into the clamshell containers so there is no chance for contact with any wheat or gluten in harvesting.
