Weather

Strawberries are the most fragile of fruit. The mild coastal valleys of California are heralded as the best place in the world to grow strawberries nearly year-round. But we still must grow them out in the open where weather and Mother Nature can take its toll. Early in the year, Southern California strawberries are ripening in the wet winter season, so any fruit that has begun to ripen can potentially be lost to rain. Short days and cold snaps slow down the ripening process and make production in the early months erratic. Later as the days become longer with the beginning of spring, we can still experience weather disruptions, but conditions continue to improve providing for delicious fruit warmed and ripened under the California sun.

Later into the summer months as production moves up the coast, weather can still provide challenges in the field. At this point in the season, strawberries can be damaged by summer heat waves or early fall rains. We hope for long mild summers that provide cool, dry, sunny days and moderate nights. The California Coastline is the best possible location to achieve optimum strawberry growing weather conditions providing for cool ocean breezes and sandy soil. These conditions allow for larger, firmer fruit than can be fully ripened for maximum flavor for our customers all over the world.
